4034 (1694-1695)

Part of the floorplan for the newly proposed hospital. 

 This volume contains papers and letters for the period 1694 to 1695 and were received in the year 1695.

• The Daghregister has two folios numbered 144. Several notable incidents were recorded, amongst others:
  • fo. 111. The captain of the English ship Josias (Joshua) complains how a black boy on his ship, who was not a slave and entrusted with his goods, stole gold and gems worth 600 guilders and escaped the ship during the night.
  • fo.126. Catrijna Backers of Enschede, wife of Laurens Pieters, is apprehended as a stow-away on the ship Ridderschap. She was disguised in male clothing intending to make her way to Batavia. She is charged on the same day for fleeing and theft. She claims to flee the continual violence and abuse by her husband. She is sentenced to be severely flogged and imprisoned in a women's institute for fifty years, working for the public works. She is also to pay a fine of one hundred 'Reals of Eight', plus costs due to the court.
  • fo. 131. A fire broke out in a freeman's horse stable which then spread to several other freemen's houses which were all destroyed in the fire. Five horses lost their lives.
  • fo. 136. Joseph van Batavia, a seventeen year old slave, was sentenced to be severely flogged, branded and put in chains for the theft of gold and silver articles from the house of Theunis Dircksz van Schalckwijk whilst helping to save furniture from the fire of the fourth of February.
  • fos. 145-155. Publication of an extensive Plakkaatboek with many decrees covering ten folios.
  • fo. 163. Mention is made of a flu or cold virus going around affecting the general population, with many sick, and as many as half the company's slaves sick in bed. News comes in that a good hot-water spring has been discovered close by.
  • fo. 164. The flu virus is still very active and a freeman's wife and child reportedly died as a result. Johannes Pretorius, borgerraad, also dies as result of the 'flu'.
  • fo. 168. A freeman, Hendrik Persijn, died of wounds sustained from an attack by a leopard. On the seventeenth Jan Herbst, a freeman from Stellenbosh, is reported to have been attacked by a lion. He is still alive but not expected to survive.
  • fo. 169. During the night, thieves attempted to break into the house of Jans Stevensz Botma but were unsuccessful. Several people were arrested.
  • fo. 174. A small fleet of homeward-bound English ships; Charles the Second, Modena, Samson and Samuel, unexpectedly departed without notifying the authorities. At the same time, a group of unknown men violently robbed a free-black fisherman on the beach of his day's catch and subsequently escaped to one of the departing English ships.
  • fo. 175. During the night the body of a slave child was discovered near a freeman's house. After an inquest by the fiscal and delegates, it was concluded that the child had died of disease.
  • fos. 181-187. Comprehensive instructions to the captain and council of the ship De Tamboer, concerning the slave trade on Madagascar and subsequent transport to Ceylon.
  • fos. 204-206. Sentencing of Bastian van Bengalen, slave of Gerard van der Bijl for theft, and Catharina van Bengalen and her husband Andries Voermeester for receiving and possession of stolen goods.
  • fo. 208. A posse comprising of freemen and company employees assembled to go out and search for a group of about twenty run-away slaves and fugitives.
  • fo. 209. A young manumitted free-black confessed to having had intercourse with a fourteen year old girl of Dutch parents and getting her pregnant.
  • fo. 212. A summons was issued against the fugitive soldier and cowherd, Jan Hendrik Schoonhek of Garlen, to report to the Court of Justice at the Castle of Good Hope within three times twenty-four hours. He is a suspect in the murder of a fellow soldier, Jacobus Jansen of Campen, on the outpost 'De Bottellerije'. A reward of twenty-five Rixdollars is offered for any information leading to his apprehension or arrest.
• Folios 238 to 240 depict the proposed building plans for renovations to part of the Castle of Good Hope. 
• Folio 249 depicts a building plan for the newly proposed hospital.
• Folios 490 to 491 contain the expense accounts of eight ships, spread over nine unnumbered folios. 
• Folios 569 to 571 were not bound in the correct order. They are bound in the following order: 571, 569 and 570.

The archives have added a note to this inventory which reads: "Fol. 238: gefacsimileerd in Grote Atlas van de Oost-Indische Compagnie deel VII p. 396; Fol. 239: gefacsimileerd in Grote Atlas van de Oost-Indische Compagnie deel VII p. 396". This note refers to the floorplans for the new hospital on folios 238 and 239, which have been incorporated into an atlas compiled by the archives.
