son of the late Captain Henry BROADWAY, H.E.I. Company's St.Helena
Artillery.

A few hundred of Emigrants have just arrived from Great Britain and Ireland.
Destined for the Eastern Province, but with permission to remain here if
they prefer doing so. The best advise that can be given to an Emigrant
Laborer is to take the first employment that offers. He must serve an
apprenticeship to the manner of working, to the customs and habits of the
new country, to which he must accommodate his hands, taste and temper; and
the sooner he begins, and the more he regards his first engagements as an
Apprenticeship, the sooner will he become a valuable, thriving and contented
Colonist. He should at once make up his mind to submit to a total change of
life in his adopted home. Having done this, he will probably find in almost
any part of this Colony that he has made a good exchange.

Saturday 13 March 1847

DIED at Glenthorn on the 8th Feb, of dysentry, the Revd. W. CHALMERS, of
Tyumie, Kaffirland, connected with the Glasgow Missionary Society. He was in
the 45th year of his age, and has fallen in the cause of his Divine Master,
on account of the distresses to which he had been subjected during the
present warfare in which this country has been involved. His dying hours
eminently illustrated the words: "Mark the perfect man and behold the
upright, for the end of that man is peace."

The Next of Kin and Creditors of John DENNIS, deceased, of the Graham's Town
District, are required to take notice that the said deceased died intestate,
and that a Meeting of the Next of Kin and Creditors of the deceased, and
surviving spouse, and all others whom these presents may concern will be
held before the Resident Magistrate, at his Office, Graham's Town, on
Wednesday the 5th May next at 10 o' clock in the forenoon precisely; and all
such Persons as aforesaid are hereby required to attend at the time and
place aforesaid, then and there to see some Person or Persons selected by
such Magistrate, for approval by the Master of the Supreme Court, as fit and
proper to be by the said Master appointed Executor or Executors Dative to

Another Emigrant Ship, the Gilbert Henderson, has gone ashore in Algoa Bay
in a "brisk gale", says the Report. When this vessel was in Table Bay
certain shippers by her, or their agents, applied to the Marine Insurance
Company to underwrite part of her cargo destined for Port Elizabeth. The
company, with great and commendable prudence, employed Captain BANCE to
examine and report upon her ground tackle, amongst other things, and that
gentleman reported unfavorably. The Company thereupon refused to accept the
risk. The event has justified their judgement and proceedings. But what is
to be said of the parties who send out Emigrant Ships to this colony so
shamefully unprovided? This is the second that has been lost within these
few months, from the same cause, the Galatea in Mossel Bay and the Gilbert
Henderson in Algoa Bay. And what is to be said of the London Surveyors but
that they are either incompetent or corrupt? From this cause the character
of the Bays in this Colony has often suffered; exposure like this are
designed to rectify this abuse.
