Oct 31st.

Graham’s Town, 23rd October 1846
Lieutenant-Colonel VAN DER MEULEN and Officers 73rd Regt take the opportunity of meeting Captain BROWN of the barque Catherine to express to him their high sense of his generous endeavours to afford assistance to HM Troop Ship Apollo (having 73rd Regt on board) when in great danger of going on shore on the reefs at the Great Fish River Mouth, at th place called Waterloo Bay, on the 30th August last.
They feel grateful to Captain BROWN for having voluntarily left his ship at that time to give his opinion, founded on experience, as to the danger attending a longer stay on the part of the Apollo, and to tender his assistance to carry a hawser to a neighbouring vessel.
Lt-Col VAN DER MEULEN and Officers 73rd also sincerely regret to hear of the wreck, on the 5th instant, of the barque Catherine, at Waterloo Bay: and while they rejoice to hear of Captain BROWN’s escape, and that of his crew, cordially sympathise with him in his misfortune.

WATERING THE STREETS
For about six months in the year the dust in the Heeregracht, Keizersgracht, and some neighbouring streets, is not only an annoyance, but really injurious to goods in open shops and stores. For some fifty or sixty pounds this annoyance could be kept under, or wholly removed, by sprinkling these streets with water from the common watering carts. To the Householders of Keizersgracht, Heerengracht, Shortmarket-street and St.George’s-street, this would be a mere trifle, probably not more than a half-penny a day, for six months. They might be invited to meet and consider this by their Wardmasters.

THE NAUTILUS
Cape Town, 29th October 1846
Captain J.P. ELLIS, brig ‘Nautilus’
Dear Sir, We regret to observe in the Zuid Afrikaan of this date a repetition of the complaints relative to the treatment of the Burghers on board our vessel during the late voyage from Algoa Bay, and we feel ourselves called upon in justice to you to state, that having had many opportunities of observing the provisions served out and the accommodations set apart to the Burghers, in our opinion, having had some experience in these affairs, no just ground of complaint exists.
That these persons, many of them members of respectable and even wealthy families, should have found themselves exceedingly uncomfortable, when on board a vessel for the first time in their lives, and suffering much in bad weather, from sea-sickness, is not to be wondered at, but we again assert that in our opinion there is no ground for just complaint. On the contrary, we have pleasure in bearing our testimony to your unremitted attention, not only to the duties of the vessel, but to the comfort of all on board, as afar as you had in your power.
We remain, dear Sir, your obedient servants
Henry HEWITT

FRONTIER
(Graham’s Town Journal)
Received information from the N.E. Boundary, dated 21st instant, from which it appears that a dispatch had just reached the Colony for the Governor from the Diplomatic Agent, W. FYNN, now in the Amaponda country, and it appears that two out of three messengers entrusted there with were destroyed on the way. The letter before us states –
The express for His Excellency from Mr. FYNN, was brought to the Kei, below Stoffel VENTER’s, by two men that have in my opinion been murdered. Three men were coming with the letters, one of whom providentially escaped, although fired at several times. He had to conceal himself in the water from 12 o’clock until sun-set, keeping only his head out of the water. These men are supposed to have been destroyed by the colonial levies, and not by the Kaffirs.
This day the Rifle Brigade, consisting of 281 rank and file, and the following officers, reached Graham’s Town:- Capts. A.H. HORSFORD, A.S. MURRAY, and GIDSON; Lieuts. J. AECKWITH, CARTWRIGHT, V.O. OXENDEN, and F.D. HOWELL. This Corps is to march to-morrow for Colonel SOMERSET’s division, and to which it is to be attached. It appears to be peculiarly well adapted for the service of this frontier. The dress is very similar to that of the C.M. Rifles, and their other appointments just suited to this country, and to the duty they will be required to do on this border.
Tuesday – Received information of a hair-breadth escape from death by Mr. PENNY, jun., of Salem. It appears that yesterday he was out a few miles from his place of residence in search of some missing oxen. He was crossing a deep and rocky pass on the Assagai River, near a dense bush called the Buffalo Kloof, when he perceived a Kaffir armed with a gun moving in a crouching posture a short distance before him.
Being on a restive horse, Mr. PENNY, though lame, dismounted for the purpose of having greater command of his gun, but before reaching the ground received the fire of the savage, and whose aim was so well meant, that the ball passed through the brim of his hat. Mr. P. fired in return, but at that moment he saw two other Kaffirs running to cut off his retreat from the pass into which he had entered. Not a moment was to be lost; springing therefore into his saddle, he dashed forward, and succeeded in making good his retreat from the lurking enemy.
Wednesday – Information came in to day that during the previous night a large number of cattle had been swept off from the Institution of Farmersfield. The adroit plunderers had succeeded in emptying three kraals and in making off with the whole of the cattle which they had contained. Unfortunately, the village was but weak, arising from a number of its most useful hands having been called to do active service in the field, and others of them being absent at the Kowie with wagons for supplies. Pursuit was, however, immediately made by a small party on the track of the marauders…. Reported that the spoors of several Kaffirs had been seen near Vaal Krans, 18 N.W. of Graham’s Town, and apprehensions are entertained of robberies in that quarter.
Thursday – Received information of the loss of the little coaster “Albatross”, the property of Messrs. CAWOOD, in attempting, for the first time, to enter the mount of the river. It seems that she reached that point on Tuesday, and succeeded in crossing the bar in safety. In nearing the bluff, however, at the entrance of the narrows, from some error of steerage she got on the sand on the western shore. Assistance being promptly given, a rope was made fast to her from the opposite bank, and it was expected that the next day she would have been secured from danger. Unfortunately, it came on to blow a hurricane, and in spite of every effort she was driven on the rocks on the Eastern side of the river, where we understand she is a complete wreck. We believe a great part of the cargo has been or will be saved. No lives have been lost.
The regret felt at this misfortune is heightened from the fact that it was an experimental trip, and that it must damp the ardor of those who are anxious to make the Fish River available for maritime purposes. However, one fact has been proved, namely that the impediment to the navigation of the River does not consist in the bar, and which in this instance was crossed without difficulty. The great desideratum at all such places as the Knysna, Kowie, and Fish River, appears to be a steam-tug. With this all these places would be easy and safe, without such aid they must ever be difficult and dangerous. The “Albatross” was an old vessel, her burthen about 20 tons. She was laden chiefly with Flour and salt.
Friday – Received a copy of the following official report:-
Farmersfield, November, 1846.
With great pleasure I write to inform you that we have overtaken the Kaffirs who took our cattle from Farmersfield, and recovered all the cattle except one which the thieves had slaughtered, and was preparing to cook it. The thieves were under Blue Krantz, on the Braak River, in a very deep kloof near the River, where men may fear to enter.
We there fell in with three Kaffirs. One was coming out of the bush just as we entered, we fired and shot him through the forehead, leaving him dead. Some of our party whom we had posted below in the kloof shot the other two, one through the lungs, leaving him dead also. The third was shot through the back, who fell, leaving all his things which he was carrying and cried out for mercy; he however did not wait, but immediately threw himself down some rocks into the river, it was late in the day. No persons were left to protect the place, so we did not search for him. We are certain he will never see his country again.
After driving away our cattle the thieves selected 39 of the best, - 38 of which we have recovered.
We have taken the following articles from these thieves:- 2 guns, with powder horns and 2 pouches, with many balls, 6 assagais, 3 riems, 2 pecks or hoes, 3 knap-sacks, 3 tinder boxes, pipers, knives, &c., 3 karosses, 1 whip.
Information has been received from Kaffirland, to the effect that Col. SOMERSET, within the last few days, has made a most successful movement upon Pato’s position, near the source of the Buffalo, capturing 2,000 head of fine cattle. Two men of the C.M. Rifles are said to have been killed in this affair, - but the loss on the part of the Kaffirs is not mentioned, nor do we infer it can have been great, as the enemy, on finding whom he had to deal with, fell back at once, leaving the above-mentioned number of cattle in the hands of the British force. It is stated that Colonel SOMERSET in making a reconnoisance previous to his attack, narrowly escaped being intercepted by the enemy. We have also an account purporting that an attempt was made on Monday last, the 23rd instant, by the Kaffirs to intercept a convoy of mule wagons on their way with supplies from Fort Peddie to Colonel SOMERSET’s camp on the Gualana. It seems that the escort, consisting of 18 men, were inside these wagons, and, consequently, not been seen by the Kaffirs, the latter probably considered they were without guard. Be this as it may, the Kaffirs presented themselves in such force that it was not thought prudent to proceed; - wheeling round, therefore, the convoy succeeded in getting back at a sharp pace to Fort Peddie without injury.
Saturday – Received further particulars from the N.E. Boundary, and from which it appears that the poor men who were killed while bringing dispatches for His Excellency were shot by a party of Boers at the Kei Drift. They were sitting on the ground at the time when attacked, and were mistaken, it must be supposed, for Kaffirs; but still the attack appears to have been so thoughtlessly made, that the government is called upon by every principle of justice and humanity to cause a rigid inquiry into the whole of the circumstances attending the case. One man escaped by concealing himself in the water among reeds, with only his mouth and nostrils exposed for air. He remained in this perilous and painful situation from noon until sun-set, and then succeeded in affecting his escape with part of the dispatches, which he picked up on the spot, where they were at the moment of attack.

FRONTIER
(Frontier Times)
Monday – A shocking murder was wantonly and publicly committed in High-street, Graham’s Town, yesterday evening, The murderer is a young Hottentot in the employ of Mr. OGILVIE. The man, it seems, was standing in the street with his gun loaded, and was speaking to two Hottentot girls, who were in charge of two little children belonging to Mr. E. PHILIPPS, to one of whom he made a proposal, which on her declining to accept, he levelled his gun and threatened to shoot her. The children on seeing him raise his gun, immediately ran off, the elder one, a boy of about four years of age, leading the younger. The man fired, and the ball passing through the shoulder of one of the girls, who was killed on the spot, struck the other, who, after lingering a short time, also expired. The man is in custody.
