FRONTIER (GT Journal)
It is our melancholy duty to record the death of Captain HENDERSON RE. A few days ago he attended as a mourner the funeral of one of the men of his corps, walking down the High-street apparently in perfect health. Since then he complained of having taken cold – inflammatory symptoms presented themselves – and which, in spite of the power of medicine, terminated fatally. He died yesterday, and it is a striking, though melancholy, co-incidence that his brother fell beneath the assegai of the Kafirs in the passes of the Fish River, on the same day ten years ago. He and his father-in-law, Mr. MAHONY, were endeavouring to reach the Post of Kafir Drift, when they were intercepted by the Kafirs, and both mercilessly despatched.
DISTRESSING AND FATAL ACCIDENT
The family of Dr. PARROT, of Fort Beaufort, has been plunged into deep affliction by the following fatal accident. It appears that on Wednesday se’nnight the deceased, the second son of Dr.P, a young man, 20 years of age, holding the appointment of Clerk in the Commissariat, was out riding in the vicinity of Beaufort with Mr. SKINNER of the same department. They had ridden as far as the Old School on the Kat River, towards the Blink Water, and were returning home, when the horse rode by Mr. PARROT, a mettlesome animal, became restive, and was pulled, in order to check his speed, to one side of the road. The temper of the horse being known to Mr. SKINNER, this circumstance did not engage his attention; he rode forward for a short distance, but then not seeing his companion he returned to the spot where he had parted from him. Here he found him near some bushes lying prostrate, resting upon his hands as though making an effort to raise himself. His horse was at a short distance, the saddle turned under his legs and at which he was violently kicking. Mr. S sprang to the assistance of his unfortunate friend, whom he found in a state of stupor. He raised him, ran to the river for some water, and used, but in vain, every means at his command which might restore departed consciousness. After the lapse of a short time a Hottentot passed on horseback by whom a message was despatched to the family of the sufferer, and in a short time his father in the deepest distress was on the spot. At this time the unfortunate youth was rapidly sinking. A vein was opened but with no effect, and ultimately a wagon was obtained on which he was carefully conveyed to his home. Here everything was done that could be devised by medical skill and parental affection. Dr. POWER, of the 7th Dragoon Guards, was most assiduous in affording every assistance to the dying youth, but it was soon discovered that no human effort could save him. The horse must have struck him, it appears, immediately behind the ear, causing a dreadful fracture on the posterior part of the skull and forcing the brain by the concussion towards the nostrils. The unfortunate youth only lingered for a few hours, leaving his family in a state of distress too sacred to be dwelt upon and too poignant to be described.

Sir, Will you permit me through your columns to inform such of the Road Board as do not travel over it daily, that the Rondebosch Road is not only in a bad, but a very dangerous state, and had been so for many months. The necks of travellers and the springs of their vehicles are in great jeopardy, and unless more carts and labourers are employed than at present, the evil will never be removed. The Government are at present drawing upwards of £150 per month from the toll, and can, therefore, well afford to keep the road in a good state of repair.
Your &c
Rondebosch.

AWFUL AND SUDDEN DEATH BY LIGHTNING
(Graham’s Town Journal)
It is our painful duty to record the sudden deaths by lightning of one of our enterprising Sheep Farmers, Mr. Frederick PHILIPPS, and his maid-servant, which occurred at his Farm, “Malang’s Kraal”, about 50 miles from Graham’s Town, on Thursday evening last, the 13th instant. We have been favoured with a sight of a letter, addressed by one of Mr. PHILIPPS’s family to a relative in this town, the particulars of which are as follow: The storm had been raging for a considerable time, accompanied with very heavy rain, and much thunder and lightning, during the continuance of which Mr. Frederick PHILIPPS led Mrs. F. PHILIPPS to a sofa, a place he considered more free from danger than any other part of the room. They were immediately joined by Mr. Thomas PHILIPPS, the father of Mr. F. PHILIPPS, and by his son, Mr. John PHILIPPS, and all were seated on the sofa, when about eight o’clock in the evening the house received a violent shock, and the electric fluid struck Mr. F. PHILIPPS and stunned the other parties. Mr. Thomas PHILIPPS was the first to recover, when he perceived with horror that his son Frederick had not so fortunately escaped the awful visitation. On rising to assist his son, he found his eyes much distorted, and his head leaning on the shoulder of Mrs. PHILIPPS. Every effort was made to restore animation, but life was extinct. During this agonising scene a servant girl entered the room from the nursery, and was instantly struck dead in the doorway by the same electric fluid, which had found no other means of escape.
Since the above was in type we have received a letter from one of Mr. PHILIPPS’s afflicted family, an extract from which we give below.
“On the evening of Thursday the 13th the thunder clouds assumed an angry appearance, and about half past 7 a severe storm commenced, gradually approaching the Kaga river, where it burst with great violence, so as to alarm the inhabitants much. It appeared to have passed over Malang’s Kraal, where Mr. Thomas PHILIPPS, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick PHILIPPS and Mr. John PHILIPPS, with their two children, had assembled in the sitting room. At 8 o’clock it returned with redoubled force; the party were breathing prayers for each others safety, when the fluid, with a crash like the discharge of a cannon, struck the chimney of the sitting room, the main portion forcing its way obliquely through the lower part of the chimney into the passage, striking the servant maid, Margaret McTARVISH, who was in the act of opening the door to enter the sitting room, on the right shoulder, and passing out through her left side, leaving her a blackened corpse. Again it turned through the passage, and out at the kitchen door, partially stunning the colored servants assembled there, and leaving a strong smell, as they say, of gunpowder.
“It appears on coming through the chimney a small portion struck against an unburnt brick, which occasioned it to turn, chipping a piece off the door, ran along the door frame, and struck the opposite wall behind the sofa, on which the party were seated, exactly like two musket balls, about 2½ inches separate; they recoiled, leaving a deep dent and a leaden blue mark, and entered between the shoulders of Mr. Frederick PHILIPPS, striking the child out of Mrs. PHILIPPS’s arms, and, as she describes, occasioning a burning sensation on her limbs, and inflicting several skin-deep wounds on Mr. John PHILIPPS. Mr. T. PHILIPPS, who was luckily seated near the front door, alone escaped, and as he ran to support his son, and trying to rouse him, the poor fellow exclaimed “Jesus Christ” twice, and expired without a mark or singe to show where the element had penetrated, but as his shoulders were not more than four inches from exactly opposite the recoil, it is supposed it must have entered there. He soon afterwards became quite discolored.
“No metal in the house was injured, the candles not blown out, nor any displaced, although it penetrated the apartment in five different places.
“A gentleman riding on the neighbouring height describes the country as appearing to him a mass of fire, and suddenly it divided into 6 different streams of fire, all of which went in the direction of the Kaga River. The candles were extinguished at POLLARD’s, but no damage done. A dog was killed by the fluid in front of Mr. MURRAY’s house door at the same time.”
We deeply sympathise with Mrs. PHILIPPS under this awful bereavement, and we are quite sure that all those who had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Frederick PHILIPPS, in the capacity of a husband, father, friend or neighbour, will agree with us that his loss will be considered no ordinary calamity. We cannot withhold also the expression of our sympathy for Mr. Thomas PHILIPPS, the venerable and highly esteemed father of Mr. F, PHILIPPS, whose sufferings and those of his afflicted family will receive no small consolation arising from their knowledge of the correct Christian life led by his late son, and that he is gone to a brighter and better world.
