SIR JOHN TRUTER
Sir John Andreas TRUTER, late President of the Court of Justice, died on Thursday morning at the advanced age of eighty-one years and eight months. Sir John’s career as a lawyer and a judge for a long course of time, and in seasons of great difficulty, is well known, and a review of his conduct leaves on the mind an impression highly favourable to his character. In private life he was affectionate and friendly, being always active in advancing the welfare of others, and never more cheerful and happy than when his efforts in their behalf were crowned with success. He was an accomplished scholar, and in promoting Education among all ranks and classes of people in this colony his energy never flagged, his zeal never waxed cold. There is a sort of pleasure mixed with the melancholy that steals upon the mind, when such a man is known to have retired, as it were, from this life, not merely resigned, but unfeignedly thankful and content. His last days were cloudless, and his approaching change was prepared for with his usual love of order and simplicity. One almost hears him saying “I have lived. It is enough. I pass in humble hope on the Redeemer into the next mansion of my Father’s house.”

DEATH on the 6th instant, my beloved wife Christina Johanna DE KOCK, born LEY, of which I hereby give notice to Relatives and Friends.
