BIRTH at Richmond on Friday 9 November 1855, Mrs Richard RUTHERFOORD of a son

DIED at Port Elizabeth on Saturday 10 November after a protracted illness, Mr. Bartholomew BOWER, aged 28 years, deservedly regretted by his friends.

DIED in Alice on the 24th October last, Margaret Ann, beloved wife of Mr. O.W. JEFFERY, aged 29 years, [8] months and 24 days. Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. J.C. [LESTER] of Cape Town.

A SAD CHAPTER
On the night of Sunday last an unhappy inhabitant of Port Elizabeth, we regret to have to announce, committed in a fit of despondency the terrible act of suicide. Mr. CASTLEMAN, to whom we refer, had long been much respected here as a quiet, orderly, obliging man, but latterly had given way to the fearful vice of intemperance, which plunged him in his sober moments into such deep melancholy that in one of his fits he committed the terrible act we have alluded to. He leaves a widow and young family to deplore his loss.
A second fearful act was committed the same morning by a Fingoe, who in a fit of violent temper had cleft in two the head of his unfortunate wife. He tried to make his escape but has been apprehended and committed for trial.
Yesterday a child of Mr. STAINES received a severe kick from a horse in the street, but is since doing well.
