Sudden death of Well-known resident.
The news of the death of Mrs. BROWN the wife of Mr. James BROWN, of Burnley came with tragic suddenness early on Thursday afternoon, April 4th.  The deceased had not been in the best of health for the past two or three years and some time ago had undergone an operation.  Everything seemed to be going on as well as could be expected up to Thursday morning, when she suddenly told the nurse that her death was near at hand.  Consequently the family and near relatives were summoned to the bedside and soon it was evident that the patient was steadily sinking.
A memorial service was held in the Wesleyan Church at 3 p.m., on Friday and conducted by the Resident Minister, the Rev. T. STANTON.  So well known and highly respected is the BROWN family in the district that the Church could hardly contain the relatives and friends who came in several cases many miles to pay their last respects and to offer their sympathy to the bereaved family.  The interment took place at the local cemetery.   The deceased lady was 60 years of age and for many years had been a staunch supporter of the Wesleyan Church.  Much sympathy is felt with Mr. James BROWN and family in their sad bereavement.

Fatal Scorpion Bite.
The inquest on a coloured child, named George WRIGHT, aged four years, was concluded by Mr. W.B. GUNN, R.M., a t Somerset West last Saturday.  At a previous hearing the child was said to have been bitten by a scorpion on the farm “Steynsrust,” about three miles from Somerset West, on March 17th, Dr. CRUYWAGEN, District Medical Officer of Somerset West, said the child was brought to him on Sunday, March 17, in a state of collapse, and died shortly after reaching his surgery.  He was of the opinion that death was caused by the bite of some poisonious insect, such as a scorpion.  The magistrate returned a verdict of accordance with this evidence.

The wedding of Mr. Edgar MUIR, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. MUIR to Miss Olive PHILLIPS, of Tarkastad, was a very brilliant affair.  Residents inform us that it was the biggest wedding ever seen there, the guests numbering about 500.  Mr. and Mrs. Edgar MUIR are expected back from their honeymoon next week and will take up their residence at Westerford.  A large number of Dordrechtities attended the wedding at Tarkastad, the bridegroom’s family being a very popular one here.  We wish the happy couple long life and prosperity.
Hearty congratulations to Mr. Sydney BIRCH, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E.V. BIRCH of Vogelvlei, who was married to Miss ANDERSON at Novalspont yesterday.

Fatal Accident near Kinwilliamstown
Elderly Farmer Killed
King Williamstown, Monday.
News of a fatal motor accident on Saturday afternoon some miles out of town is to hand.  From information available it appears that James NEUMANN, aged about seventy, was driving two oxen along the road, when a car appeared.  The oxen separated, and NEUMANN chased one animal over the road to join the other.  He was, however, caught by the car.  The bumper hit his leg and broke it, while the handle of one door caught NEUMANN’s head, causing injuries from which shortly afterwards he expired.  The handle was bent by the impact.  The driver of the car was Sylvester CROZET of East London, against whom a charge of culpable homicide is being preferred. – Reuter.

A Fatal Stab
John SHABE, a sixteen-year-old Xosa labourer, was yesterday charged in the local Magistrate’s Court with the murder of Joseph MANKWALL, who was found fatally stabbed in the chest on the corner of Wodehouse and Sprigg Streets, near Burberow Bridge, last Monday night.  The case was remanded until the 17th (Friday next).

A Sad Tragedy.
A sad tragedy (says the “TEmbuland News”) occurred on the farm Trout River, in the Maclear district, on the evening of Tuesday last, when Mr. P.H. PRETORIUS, a well-known Elliott farmer of Kudus Rand, had a seizure and expired instantly whilst engaged in shooting baboons.  The occurrence was promptly reported to the Magistrate at Elliott and an inquiry was held by the Magistrate of Maclear last Wednesday.  From evidence offered, it appeared that the deceased, in company with his son and brother, went to Mr. PRETORIUS’s farm, Trout River, for the purpose of shooting baboons.  His brother and his son left him with the object of driving down the krantz and found Mr. PRETORIUS lying dead.  The empty cartridges were lying beside him and a live cartridge had been partly inserted into the breech of the rifle.  The evidence pointed to Mr. PRETORIUS having had a seizure and suddenly rolled over and died.  A verdict of death from natural causes was returned.

Molteno Notes
Fatal Accident on Molteno Farm.
The Resident Magistrate, Mr. R.H. CHENOWETH, conducted an enquiry into the fatal accident to the late Petrus Jochemus GOOSEN at the Court House to-day.  It appears that the deceased, who was a market gardener carrying on business on the farm “Sieraadsfontein,” had just completed inspanning preparatory to setting out for market, and being an elderly man he had received the assistance of Messrs VAN ZYL and GROVE, who were near at hand.  According to the evidence of these two witnesses, the deceased after leaving them proceeded towards the gardens leading the oxen himself.  After going about 70 yards the witnesses noticed that the oxen were moving fast and Mr. VAN ZYL called to the deceased to step clear of the wagon, but in the act of doing so he apparently fell, and the wagon passed over his body.  Medical aid was summoned immediately, but the nature of the injuries was such that little hope of recovery was entertained.  The deceased succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, May 8th, the verdict returned at the inquest being accidental death due to shock from being run over by a wagon resulting in a cardiac failure.  The deceased was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church and the funeral took place on Thursday and was conducted by the resident minister, the Rev. J.F. BOTHA.

An Extraordinary Coincidenc
It is an extraordinary coincidence that the late Mr. P.J. GOOSEN’s brother was killed a few months ago within a few yards of the present accident by the same wagon and almost exactly the same way.  This is the third brother to meet his death by accident.

Death of Mr. Samuel GREGORY
The death of Mr. Samuel GREGORY at the age of 74 years occurred at his residence in town on Monday, after a long period of indifferent health.  The funeral took place the following day, and the services both in the Wesleyan Church and at the graveside were conducted by the resident minister, the Rev. T. STANTON.  The deceased was very well known and highly respected in this neighbourhood.  He was a retired mine manager, having been an official at the Cyphergat mines  during their flourishing days.  Latterly he acted as Municipal Valuator.

Sudden death of Mr. Thomas ANDERSON.
The townspeople were shocked on Friday morning when they heard the news of the death of Mr. Thomas ANDERSON.  The deceased had been actively engaged at his business two days before and on the day of his death he had been for a walk.  To those who knew him intimately, however, it was no great surprise, as he had suffered from an incurable disease for over twenty years.  The funeral took place on Sunday morning, May 12.  The body was taken to the Masonic Lodge, of which the deceased was a member.  There was a good muster of Masons present to pay their last respects to a departed brother.  A memorial service was held in the Wesleyan Church conducted by the Rev. T. STANTON.  After the Church’s committal prayers at the graveside, the very impressive Masonic Burial Service was conducted by Wor. Bro. HUDDY.  The deceased was an old and faithful worshipper at the local Wesleyan Church and an active member of the Molteno branch of the I.O.G.T.

Congratulations to Mr. And Mrs. A.C. MEYER on the birth of a bonny daughter at the nursing home, Dordrecht.

Indwe was shocked on Friday when news came through from Rhodesia of the death of Mr. Tommy VAN ROOYEN, brother-in-law of Mr. H.A. EVANS, from heart failure.  Deceased, it is reported, was in the best of health up to the moment of his death.  Before settling in Rhodesia, the late Mr. VAN ROOYEN carried on business as a general dealer at Indwe.  Great sympathy is felt locally for his widow and two children (son and daughter).  The son, who was spending a holiday with Mr. And Mrs. EVANS, left for Rhodesia immediately the sad news was received.

Last Monday afternoon, the 13th of May, Mr. Mrs. Cornelius MILES, of Table Farm, Hilton, celebrated their golden wedding in the presence of a crowd of about 250 relatives and friends...
...Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius MILES were married in the old Hilton church on the 13th of May, 1879, and have lived at Hilton ever since.  Mrs. MILES’s maiden name was PHILLIPS.  They have one son, Mr. Jack MILES, of Mapassa, and two daughters, Mrs. HODKIN,  Hilton, Mrs. H. DICKS, Elandslaagte, Natal, and several grandchildren, (Four grandchildren were unable to be present at the golden wedding, Lilian HODKIN, who is nursing at Somserset Hospital, Capetown, and Margaret Hodkin Pears MILES and Eleanor MILES, who are pursuing their studies at Grahamsotwn.

The death has occurred of Charles HOWARD, a veteran sportsman and formerly a butcher, who purchased at a moderate price the mare which foaled the famous Priory Park, the winner of a succession of Classics for Mr. J.B. JOEL, who purchased it for £3,000. – Reuter.

Obituary
We regret to record the death of a very estimable lady, Miss Ida BUCKLEY, which sad event occurred at East London on Saturday last.  The deceased lady had many sterling qualities which endeared her to the community, being and earnest Christian and Church worker.   The Anglican Church of St. Augustines is the poorer in the loss of so devoted a fellow-worker in the cause of charity.  Being in failing health, she sought a more congenial climate, and her sudden passing came as a shock to her many friends, who keenly feel her loss.

A Medal Found
Detective DAVIS, of the C.I.D., has handed in to the Bloemfontein Branch of the British Empire Service League a General Service Medal for the Great War, bearing the inscription Tpr. V.J. GORDON, S.A.M.R.  Detective DAVIS states that he found this medal in the possession of a native named William who stated that he picked it up at Tarkastad.  The owner is asked to apply to the Bloemfontein Branch of the League for the medal.

On the 23rd May last Miss M. ROOS, an assistant of the Boys Home No. 1, was married to Mr. P. PELSER, of the farm “Vogelfontein,” P.O. Jamestown, C.P.  The large attendance at the Dutch Reformed Church was evidence of the deserved popularity of this young lady.  The good wishes of the whole district go with this young couple in their future life.

Tragedy at Grahamstown
Dead Body on a Golf Course
Found by Greensman in a dam
GRAHAMSTOWN, Wednesday.
Near the Golf Club House here there is a dam, and when the Greensman went on duty this morning he saw a dark object floating in the water.  Approaching it he saw it was a human body.  When this was hauled to the bank it was found to be that of a middle aged European male.  Evidently the mind of the unfortunate fellow had been gravely deranged, for he had divested himself of all his clothing except one sock, cut his throat, and then walked into the dam.  There was nothing on him to lead to his identification.  The body was removed to the mortuary, and a Magisterial investigation will be made. – Reuter.

Advocate UPINGTON’s BODY
GRAHAMSTOWN, Wednesday.
The body of the European found in the dam this morning on the local Golf Course has been identified as that of Advocate Arthur UPINGTON.
Mr. UPINGTON’s end has caused sorrow not only in legal circles but also among the many friends he had.  Mr. UPINGTON was a man of great personal charm and a delightful raconteur, and had inherited the oratorical gifts of his father.  He was a great student of the Classics, and nothing pleased him more than to get out of the town and linger over the pages of the sages of old.  He was unmarried. – Reuter.

Advocate UPINGTON’s CAREER
GRAHAMSTOWN, Wednesday.
Arthur UPINGTON, whose body was recovered this morning from the dam of the Golf Course, was committed as an advocate in the Eastern District Courts in 1903.  He was well-known everywhere in legal circles.  His polished phrases and forensic ability mad his addresses in Court and at Bar dinners well worth careful consideration…
…Recently, Mr. UPINGTON returned from the Circuit, which, it was said, had been a good one for him.  In the past few days, however, his friends had noticed that he was not the same UPINGTON.  He was vacant and absent minded.  At breakfast the other day he ordered soup, and on Monday he told a friend that hitherto he thought he was in financial difficulties, but had found that he was well off this morning.  He left his hotel at the usual Hour of a quarter to six o’clock.  It was thought he was going for his customary walk among the glens, and everyone was horrified when it was known that his body had been found in the dam on the Golf Course.
Arthur UPINGTON was the son of a former Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, and was at school at St. Aidan’s College, Grahamstown, and subsequently at Beaumont College, Old Windsor, England. – Reuter.

At the inquest to-day relative to the death of Advocate Arthur UPINGTON, the Magistrate returned a verdict of death from a wound in the throat, self-inflicted, at a time when his mind was temporarily deranged.
In the Supreme Court this morning the Judge President made a touching reference to Arthur UPINGTON... The flags at the Supreme Court are at half mast. – Reuter.

A tragedy came to light at Oudtshoorn on Wednesday morning when the South African Party agent went fetch Mr. Robert BROWN, a middle-aged and well-known citizen.  He found that Mr. BROWN, who had gone to bed perfectly well the night before had expired during the night.

DUFFY.-  Passed peacefully away on the 15th inst., at 7, Porter Street, aged 84.  Relict of the late Andrew DUFFY.
BATGIAS.-  Died at the Duncan Vale Nursing Home, Queenstown, on the 16th June, 1929, at 5 p.m., Athenasios BATGIAS, beloved husband of P. BATGIAS, in his sixtieth year.

Dordrecht Notes
There were buried at East London on the same day this week, and immediately following each other, two old and well-known residents of Dordrecht.  Mr. Vincent CATHERINE, the eldest brother of the well-known family of that name died after much suffering at his cottage at Gonubie Mouth on Monday evening last.  He was buried on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. E.H. CATHERINE going down to the funeral.  At two-thirty on the same afternoon Mr. W. CARR, who has been resident at West Bank, East London, for the last ten years was laid to rest.  Mr. CARR passed away on Tuesday after  a short illness, and to the relatives of these two gentlemen we express our sincere sympathy.

We also regret to record the death of Mr. VAN RENSBURG, snr., which took place at Dordrecht on the 6th inst. Mr. VAN RENSBURG had been resident here practically all his life and was well knwon and much respected.  He was, in fact, member for Wodehouse at one time.  His mortal remains were laid to rest the same afternoon, and to his sorrowing widow, son and daughter we express our sympathy.

Hearty congratulations to Miss L. BLAND, who is to be married at St. Augustine’s Church next Monday, the 17th, to Mr. HARRISON of Barkly East.

Silver Wedding
Quite a happy gathering of friends assembled at the residence of Mr. And Mrs. Alex WHITE, Queenstown, on Saturday evening last on the occasion of their silver wedding.  The event took the form of a social, when an opportunity was given to relatives and friends of expressing their congratulations to Mr. And Mrs. WHITE in having been spared to celebrate this great event of their married life...

Obituary
A former Conservative Member of Parliament, Colonel Claude LOWTHER, has died at the age of 57.  During the Boer War Colonel LOWTHER was re-commended for the Victoria Cross for gallantry at the Battle of Faber’s Point.  During the Great War he was Colonel of a Battalion of Sussex men, known as “LOWTHER’s Lambs.”  - Reuter.
It is with deep regret that we announce the death of one of Queenstown’s oldest residents, Mrs. Lavinia Jane DUFFY, widow of the late Andrew DUFFEY, who came to this town in 1872, and brought up a large family, now scattered throughout the Union.  Mrs. DUFFEY, was the eldest daughter of Matthew DIXON, of Bathurst, in the District of Albany, one of the original 1820 Settlers.  She was noted for her charitable disposition, and took a very prominent part in the development and progress of Queenstown in the early days.
