FATAL ACCIDENT
On Saturday last a gardener known as HEINRICH, together with a Kafir, both in the employ of Mr. John BECK, were washed out of a cart and drowned while attempting to cross the Rhenoster –spruit, near this town, on their road home to the farm Vlakfontein. One Kaffir who was leading the cart escaped. Neither of the bodies have been recovered. The German was a hardworking man, and had long been employed on the farm by Mr. BECK, and by the former owner, Dr. KRAUSE.
ACCIDENT

He was taken back to Fauresmith and is now under the care and able treatment of Dr. NEABE

OBITUARY
The death is announced at Pretoria, on 1st January last, of Robert Stopford Shelton DOUGLAS, eldest son of Sir Percy DOUGLAS, late Lieut-Governor of the Cape Colony, in his 31st year.
FATAL ACCIDENT
A most painful occurrence happened at Boshof last week, by which Lieut. ELLIS, late of H.M’s service, lost his life. No written particulars have reached us, but from verbal reports we learn that Mr.ELLIS was thrown from his horse, or rather that the horse fell with him, his (Mr. ELLIS’s) head, in the fall, coming in violent contact with some stones or [....], by which his forehead was literally crushed in that he was picked up by some of the residents of the town and carried to his house, where he lay insensible for three or four hours, and then died. The late Mr. ELLIS was the son-in-law of MR. R.J. PAINTER, of Fort Beaufort, late member of Cape Parliament for that division. We regret to say that he leaves a young widow and four or five small children wholly unprovided for, to moarn their irreparable loss. Deceased though not brought up to till, had during his residence at Boshof, worked hard to till the soil and to raise vegetables for the Diamond-field market. He was a staunch, active young man, scarcely more than 30 years of age. As with many catastrophes of a similar kind, it seems to us poor blind mortals a most inscrutable decree of Providence that deceased should be taken from his young and helpless children, and that they should be left in absolute indigence among comparative strangers in a strange land. The remains of the late Mr. ELLIS were, it is said, committed to the tomb in the cemetery at Boshof, in less than 2½ hours from the time he mounted the horse in perfect health and vigour of life. He had, we understand, been out on the horse hunting, and had returned home to his house, when, on dismounting, the animal kicked him. He at once punished the horse with the whip, and remounted him, hoping to quiet him and to subdue his temper, when the above lamentable mishap took place. There is but little doubt that Mr.PAINTER will do all he can for his daughter (the widow) and orphan children, so soon as tidings of the sorrowful event shall reach him.
DEATH FROM LIGHTNING
On the 9th inst., Mr. Christiaan van NIEKERK, C.’s son, was struck dead by the electric fluid on the farm Fairfield, in the ward Middle-Modder-river, in this district, some four hours from this town. He had been planting potatoes in the land, and was just returning to the house, when he was killed by the very first flash of lightning. By a curious coincidence, one Jacobus BOTHA, brother-in-law of deceased, was killed in a similar manner, within fifty yards to the West of the same spot, on December 13, 1872, two years since; and only last year the lighning struck the ground near the same place. Mr. Christiaan van NIEKERK leaves a widow with 8 children to mourn their sad and sudden bereavement. Deceased was found lying on his face quite dead. He had apparently been struck in both eyes, and the crown of his hat was torn entirely out. Both velschoens were ripped open, showing that the electric fluid had passed right through the body, and out at the feet.
OUR CAPE LETTER
From our own correspondent - 7 January, 1875
If drunkenness be not on the increase here, cases of extreme brutality are becoming common enough. A few days ago a ruffian named McSORLEY, who is a plumber in Mowbray, (four miles hence) quarrelled with his wife about the apprenticeship of his son. Unfortunately both man and woman are in the habit of drinking. During the last two years McSORLEY had been in the habit of illtreating his wife, until on the last occasion he made a brutal and cowardly attack on her by knocking her down, dancing upon ber abdomen and chest, compelling her to strip naked, twisting her limbs, and beating her unmercifully. She was subsequently ordered by Dr. STEWART to the Somerset Hospital, where she died, and the Hospital Surgeon reported that the woman was dreadfully bruised, and that her breast bone was smashed. The Resident Magistrate, Mr. CAMPBELL, issued a warrant for McSORLEY’s apprehension, and he has been examined at the Police Court, and remanded until next Tuesday. He will no doubt be committed for murder, and it is only to be hoped that the severest penalty of the law will be inflicted on such an inhuman scoundrel.

LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS
With deep regret, we have to announce the death of the Rev. George SCOTT, Wesleyan Minister, and brother to the Rev. James SCOTT, General Superintendant of Wesleyan Missions in this district, which sad event occurred here last night. Deceased had long been very seriously unwell from consumption and a complication of disorders, and no hope had, for some time past, been entertained of his recovery. He was a most excellent young man and talented preacher. He was formerly stationed at Fauresmith, which place he left on a visit to England, hoping that a change would prove beneficial to his health. Since his return to this country his strength has been gradually failing. His relatives and friends, both here and elsewhere, have our sincerest sympathy in this sad affliction.

PORT ELIZABETH
From our Correspondent
29 January 1875
The following extraordinary tragedy, which occurred in a farmer’ house at Waterford, in the division of Uitenhage, has just been reported – “a lamentable occurrence took place on Saturday last in the house of a farmer at Waterford, named GROBBELAAR, resulting in the death (it is feared by his own hand) of a young man named Zacharias de BEER. From what we have been able to gather, the deceased was paying his addresses to GROBBELAAR’s daughter Maria, but the match did not meet the approval of deceased’s father. On Saturday last he called at GROBBELAAR’s house, with his gun, and while he and the object of his affection were alone in the “voorhuis” the gun was discharged, blowing out the young man’s brains. The statement of Miss GROBBELAAR is that she had just been joking with him, and he said to her ”You laugh now, but you will perhaps cry before the evening.” She had poured him a cup of coffee, and was in the act of presenting it to him when the gun went off. Mr. Field-cornet RAFFERTY was soon on the spot. He found the body of the young man lying acoss the “rustbank” and the gun had fallen between his legs. The charge had entered beneath his chin, and passed out at the crown of his head, bespattering the wall and ceiling with blood and brains. The remains of the young man were interred on Monday.

IN MEMORIUM
The late Rev. George SCOTT was born on the 14th November, 1840 at Stockholm, Sweden, where his father was a minister of the Methodist Church. That ministry was exercised for twelve years, during which the “ Word of God mightily grew and prevailed” and as one important result there demand upon the Lutheran Church in Sweden days of revival and quietening, the benefits of which appear to the present time. Prosecution, however, arose against the foreign mission and, they which believed not, moved with envy, took onto them certain lewd followers of the [….] sort, and gathered a company, and assaulted the house and Church of the English Missionary. Being refused protection by the Swedish Government he was compelled to return to his own land. This occurred when the subject of this sketch was three years of age. Soon after he had a severe attack of illness so severe that his life was despaired of. Contrary to all expectation he recovered. His boyhood was much as that of other boys. He received a thoroughly good education, and was of an open truthful and affectionate disposition. The spiritual change, spoken of in Scriptures as “Conversion” “Being born again” was wrought in him by the power of the Holy Spirit when he was about twelve years of age, and from that time until his death he continued walking in the fear of the Lord, and the comfort of the Holy Ghost. When fifteen years old, as there was as yet no Providential indication of his future ministerial course, he entered a merchant’s counting-house in Liverpool, and for six years faithfully discharged his duties of his situation.
Before the close of this period the call to the ministry came to him, and being called of God, and “well reported of by the bretheren” who knew him, he was sent to the Wesleyan Theological College at Richmond. There he remained for three years, applying himself earnestly and successfully to his studies, and employed with his fellow students in Evangelistic labours. His attention in conjunction with two or three others was especially given to the village of Hampton, in which he had the pleasure of seeing a Wesleyan Chapel erected.
The collegiate course being completed, he was sent to South Africa, and appointed to Fauresmith. After the usual period of probation he was ordained at Burghersdorp in the full work of the ministry by the “laying on of the hands of the Presbytery.”
From the time of his arrival in this country he was more or less afflicted. In June 1871 he returned home in search of health, but after remaining there for more than two years he came again to this land, having been benefited but little, if at all, by the change. The last year was spent at Bloemfontein, where, in addition to a portion of ordinary ministerial work, his energies were devoted to the instruction of Native young men for the work of Evangelists. Last August he was brought to the brink of the grave, but recovering, he gave himself again to the work he loved. His last public service was on Sunday, November 20. From that date to that of his decease on February 10 his strength gradually failed, and at times he passed through severe suffering. “None of these things “moved him” and he continued firm in his confidence in the Saviour.
As many knew him, so they might testify of his character and work. As a man, he was unselfish, considerate and true. Of an ardent disposition he was frequently betrayed into hastiness of temper or speech, which no one regretted more than himself. As a minister, he was thoroughly devoted to the labours of his office, being as a student diligent, expecially in searching the Scriptures, and thus neglected not the gift that was in him; as a pastor, not unmindful of his duty, giving special attention to the little ones of the flock, having for all children great affection; and as a preacher, striving to instruct those who heard him, his sermons being carefully thought out and delivered with much power. As a Christian, while intelligently and firmly attached to that portion of the One Church to which he belonged, he held the faith “in unity of spirit and the bond of peace” towards”all those who profess and call themselves Christans.”

IN MEMORIAM
Mr. Albert BARNET, well-known at the Fields as a diamond merchant, and who had long been suffering from that insidious malady – consumption – died on Sunday morning, the 12th inst., at about 10:30, as nearly as can be ascertained. He breathed his last in his wagon, on the farm Alsfontein, belonging to Mr. de KLERK, about 2½ hours on on horseback beyond Reddersburg, on the road to Smithfield. No-one was with him at the time except his native servant: but fortunately about an hour after his death, an old friend of deceased, Mr. Alfred George BIDEN, manager at the Fields for Messrs. GOODLIFFE, SMART and SEARLE, of Capetown, happened to arrive from Port Elizabeth by GEERING’s passenger-cart. This gentleman, though he had booked his passage through to the Fields, at once determined to leave the cart, and stay and see his friend’s body removed to Reddersburg for Christian burial. The wagon was accordingly for Christian inspanned, and reached Reddersburg in the afternoon. Nothing could exceed the kindness and attention of Mr. Robert LAVERS, jun. (the Resident Justice of the Peace), and Mrs. LAVERS, sen. Everything that could be done to assist in preparing for the sad funeral obsequies was performed by them. The funeral took place on Monday morning, prayers being read, and a sermon or address suitable to the occasion delivered by the Dutch minister, the Rev. Mr. COETZEE. The deceased was much esteemed and respected at the Diamond-fields where he had resided since 1871. He was a native of London, and was about 35 years of age. It is believed that he has two sisters living. Mr. BIDEN brought any property (money inclined) which deceased had with him at the time of his death, and handed the same over to the Orphan Master here, by whom a meeting of next of kin and creditors will be called. It may be some satisfaction to relatives and friends at a distance to know that some 30 of residents of Reddersburg attended the funeral. The late Mr. BARNETT had resided at Masonic Hotel, in Bloemfontein for some time. He arrived here at the same time as our distinguished visitor, Mr. FROUDE, but a few weeks before his death had left on a visit to the Fields. On his return from thence he rested here two or three days, and then started for Port Elizabeth, which place, as above narrated, it was not his lot to reach: indeed no one here who had seen expected that he would do so. The relatives and friends of the late Mr. BARNETT are deeply indebted to Mr. BIDEN for having stopped on his journey, in order to see and assist in the last and offices for his deceased friend.

OBITUARY
The Revd. James ALLISON, brother of late Mr. Joseph ALLISON, of this town, died at Pietermaritzburg, Natal, on the1st April, in the 70th year of his age. The late Mr. ALLISON was long since known in Natal as a very successful missionary, he having, unlike many others, taught the natives under his charge to work as well as to profess Christianity. The mission station, however, where his remarkable successes were achieved, many years since passed out of his hands, he having, at the time, through some difference of opinion, separated himself from the Wesleyan Conference. He then established a new station, many of his people followed him and, we believe, paid for the ground out of their savings. The deceased missionary labored among the tribes to the North East of this state, now upwards of 30 years since, but after a time removed to Natal. Doubtless a sketch of his life and labourers will shortly appear in the Natal journals. The Rev. Jas. CAMERON, of Natal, brother-in-law of deceased, will be among the most competent to perform this labour of love.

HYMENEAL
On Thursday last Mr. WILLIAMSON, of Cronstadt: was united in the bonds of marriage to Miss TRUTER, oldest daughter of our Landdrost, O.J. TRUTER, Esq., and great were the rejoicings and festivities thereat. At the wedding breakfast nearly all the town, including His Honor the President and Mrs. BRAND, the chief Justice and Mrs. REITZ, the Government Secretary, and all the heads of Departments were present. In the evening a grand ball, which was kept up with the spirit till the small hours the morning, completed the festivities, when every one departed highly pleased and gratified with the entertainment which was managed throughout as only Mr. and Mrs. TRUTER can carry out these things, The Artillery Band, under Mr. S. BARRATT, the Bandmaster, was in attendance at the door of the church and afterwards at the house during the breakfast, and helped with their really well-performed music to enliven the proceedings.
