ACCIDENT TO CAPE MINISTERS

Dr. SMARTT (Acting Prime Minister of Cape Colony), Mr. WALTON (the Treasurer-General), Mr. MERRIMAN, and Mr. Justice HOPLEY were among the guests at a dinner at Government House, Newlands, on a recent night. All were being driven to the station in Mr. Walton's carriage after the dinner, when, on entering the main road, a tramcar from Cape Town dashed into the carriage, completely turning it over. Dr. Smartt, Mr. Walton, Mr. Merriman, and the driver were thrown into the roadway, while Mr. Justice Hopley fell partly under the car and partly under the carriage. The car was pulled up immediately, and Mr. Justice Hopley extricated. It was feared at first that he had sustained serious injuries, but, fortunately, escaped with a severe bruise. The others were uninjured except for the shock.

A drowning fatality occurred in Natal, at Umgeni, recently, when a young man named A. S. HARRISON went to bathe in the river, and, being unable to swim, jumped in unknowingly where the water is 30 ft. deep.

The gold medal presented annually to the South African College by Mr. C. C. SILBERBAUER for the encouragement of the study of Roman-Dutch and Colonial Statute Laws has been awarded this year by the Senate to B. MULLER; proxime accessit, J. T. STROEBEL.

The Rev. W. J. BUCHANAN, who during the past seven years has been minister of the South End Baptist Church, Port Elizabeth, has gone to St. Helena, where he will assume control of the Baptist interests in that island. The Rev. Thomas ATKIN, of St. Helena, has accepted the pastorate of the South End Baptist Church.
