DIED on the 7th instant on board the ship Reliance, on the passage from Calcutta to this place, whither he was bound on sick certificate, for the recovery of his health, Captain William MacDowell HOPPER of the 57th Regt, Bengal Native Infantry, deeply regretted by his parents, Major-General and Mrs. HOPPER. He was born on the 19th November 1803 and had served upwards of nineteen years in India.

As a faithful and meritorious public servant he enjoyed uniformly the confidence and approbation of Government, and his estimable qualities obtained for him a numerous circle of friends, by whom he is sincerely lamented.

PORT NATAL
We have been favored with the perusal of a letter just received from a British Emigrant at Natal, dated December, which gives some interesting particulars of the Natal country, and of the conditions and prospects of the settlers there. This week we can only make room for the following extract:
“A plentiful harvest is expected, but the corn is more liable to rust than in the colony. The horse sickness prevails very much in these parts, also distempers among cattle &c. Indian corn seems to resist every disease, and it is expected that hundreds of muids will be harvested in the vicinity of the bay .... Many of the Dutch are in great distress, owing to the death of their cattle from the prevalent diseases which rage in these parts. The boers are also much alarmed at seeing in the newspapers lately received from the colony that the British will take possession of the Natal country; they even talk of resisting the attempt ...... A stranger suffers great inconvenience here, there being no house to afford accommodation or lodging. There are only about 20 houses at Natal, and a few near the entrance of the bay, which were erected by the 72nd, which are now used by the Emigrant Farmers, and hired to others as stores in the Shipping line.”

THE KOWIE
We are happy to learn that the Kowie is now open, and that the question of the practicability of the undertaking may, in the opinion of judicious individuals, be considered as settled. Early on Sunday morning the river opened for itself a way to the sea through the new channel on the western side, and the depth of the channel has gradually increased from 5 to 10 feet at low water. We understand that the sand is gradually clearing away every tide, and is conveyed by the current to the eastern bank of the river, thus filling up the old channel. Along the ledge of rocks which from the western boundary there is deep water, which continues quite out to sea. At present vessels drawing 8 feet of water may enter, and when the steam tug, which has been ordered, arrives, we doubt not but that vessels of a larger burthen will be found in the Kowie.

The Farm is bounded on the west by Government ground, separating it from the Estate of Rice SMITH Esq. Ten thousand Sheep may be kept thereon in good condition throughout the year. There are several Springs on, and the Assegai Bush River runs through the Estate.
The Buildings consist of two stone-built Houses, one containing 7, the other 8 Rooms, with suitable Sheds, Shearing Houses, Stables, Kraals &c. There is abundance of rich Tillage Land and a Garden well stocked with Fruit Trees.

DEATH. Departed this Life on Monday the 8th March, my dearly beloved Husband, Samuel Edward SHAWE, aged 54 years, leaving me with Eight Children to lament his loss.
