STERKSTROOM.
17th February, 1891.
Quite a gloom was cast over this village yesterday when it became known that Mr Charles BUCKLEY, of Bushman's Hoek, had breathed his last at the comparatively early age of 44 years. The deceased was a batchelor, but his loss will be sorely felt by his aged mother and family, with whom he lived. The respect with which Mr BUCKLEY and family are held was evinced by the number of people, both English and Dutch, who attended the funeral which took place to-day. All the business establishments were closed during the early part of this afternoon as a token of respect. The body was first taken to the Church-room where part of the funeral service was performed. Before proceeding to the cemetery the choir sang "When our heads are bowed with woe." The Rev Mr ALLTON, Curate of St Michael's Queenstown very impressively conducted the last sad offices. Sincere sympathy is felt for Mrs BUCKLEY and family in their sad loss, by all who know them.

LOXTON-GERRARD.

The ceremony, which was of an entirely private character, took place at the residence of the bridegroom, in the presence of a few privileged friends and the Resident Magistrate of Queenstown...
OBITUARY.
An esteemed correspondent at Hoopstad writes us:- "We are very sorry to have to record the death of Mrs WERDMULLER, at Hoopstad, on the 17th February. She had arrived here only a few months ago, in rather indifferent health, suffering from a disorder of the heart. The fond hope for her recovery became futile when it appeared that her complaint was organic. She bore her suffering, mostly accompanied by acute pain, with great patience and truly Christian resignation, more concerned about the comfort of others than her own, cheering her friends by the fortitude of her faith and the brightness of the glorious hope set before her. Miss Ida CALLAGHAN, her favourite sister, came all the way from Queenstown in post-haste, and arrived just in time to be recognized and to hold her in her arms as her soul was departing. The funeral took place on the 18th, and was attended by a goodly number of sympathizing friends, the Rev. G. RUDLOFF officiating. Although the deceased resided here only a very short time, she had endeared herself to all who had the privilege of knowing her, and who feel the bland caused by her untimely departure, all the more in a small place like this. Great sympathy is felt with the bereaved husband and the two little motherless daughters; and, we are sure, when commending them to the loving kindness and tender care of the great Heavenly Friend, who bindeth up the broken hearted,' that the large circle of relatives and friends of both Mr WERDMULLER and the late Mrs WERDMULLER will cordially unite with us." – Friend of the Free State.

DIED- At St. Mark's Mission, Kaffraria, on March 20, 1891, Arthur HOADLEY, Missionary Priest, aged 37 years.
Tuesday, March 31, 1891
It is with unfeigned regret that we announce the decease of the Rev Arthur HOADLEY, which death occurred on March 20, at St. Mark's Mission, Mr HOADLEY was for some months in the Queenstown Hospital, and during that period he endeared himself to a considerable number of friends who visited him in his enforced residence there. Mr HOADLEY was a victim to that dire malady – consumption; but he bore his burden patiently, and the comforting thought remains that he has left for a higher sphere. The loss of a dear friend is felt at all times to be irreparable, and as such the decease of Mr HOADLEY is considered. Mrs HOADLEY died a short while since; therefore there is no disconsolate widow to mourn her loss. We believe, however, that a son survives the deceased, and that arrangements will be made for his proceeding to England to join the relatives of his deceased parents. Our readers who were acquainted with the deceased will join with us in heartfelt sympathy with the surviving relatives, and in great regret at the bereavement of one so highly respected, and who had become so tightly bound with us in the bond of endearment.
