The sudden and unexpected demise of our respected Magistrate and Civil Commissioner, C. HAW Esq, has been the principal topic of conversation during the latter part of the week. The event was so unlooked for that it is difficult even now to realise the fact that he, who was so lately in health and strength amongst us, has been removed to that bourne “from whence no traveller returns”. On Wednesday week he sat in the Court with his accustomed urbanity, recording the votes for the election of members for the Divisional Council; and little did any think who recorded their votes, that they were looking upon him for the last time! Since he has dwelt in our midst he has pursued the even tenour of his way I a quiet, unostentatious manner – fulfilling his public duties with promptness and marked regularity, though, probably, his innate unobtrusiveness recoiled at the thought of leading in those social matters which the general public look to the head of a district to inaugurate and foster. The regret at his loss, however, is universal, as was shown at the funeral on Thursday last, when upwards of 500 people attended, and all the stores and shops were closed at four pm. – Graaff-Reinet Herald.

DEATH OF ANOTHER BRITISH SETTLER
A communication has just been received from Bathurst announcing the death on the 24th ult of Mr. Philip HOBBS, one of the oldest inhabitants of that village. Deceased was one of the Settlers of 1820, among whom he was well-known for his quiet, unassuming and industrious habits. The deceased became the purchaser some years ago of the Drostdy House and grounds at Bathurst, on which he resided ever after, his homestead being remarkable for its fertility, and for its orangery, now in full bearing. Deceased was for many years a member of the Wesleyan Church, the principles of which were exemplified in his walk and conversation, and in his peaceful death. A few days previous to this event he was reaping in his field. He had attained the ripe age of 79 years.
