THE LATE HON. MR. J.C. THOMPSON
(Diamond-field, July 21)
It is with serious regret that we have to chronicle the death, though not unexpected, of the Hon’ble Mr. J.C. THOMPSON, the Acting Recorder of the High Court of this Province, and Attorney-General.
The deceased was the son of the Rev. John THOMPSON, of Blackheath, near London. He took his degree of B.A. at St.John’s, Cambridge, in 1861, and was called to the bar in 1863. After proceeding to Bombay, where he practised with considerable success, he returned to England in consequence of ill health, and from thence started for the Cape, arriving in August 1866, and proceeding to Graham’s Town in the September following. He attended to his professional duties there, until he was elected by a large majority to represent that city in the Cape House of Assembly. The deep interest he took in the affairs of the colony have been the subject of public comment, and he held the entire confidence of his constituents until October 1871, when he accepted the appointment of Public Prosecutor and Commissionership at these Diamond-fields. It was at this stage that he defended his Government, while opposing the opinion of his coadjutor with regard to the allowance of claim licences to natives, at the time when the people were unanimous in their disapproval of the measure. His manliness, notwithstanding these views, and consistency on the occasion were conspicuous. This was on the 23rd July 1872. His legislative and official career since then are known to all. At the end of 1872 his health gave way, and he went to the colony on leave in January 1873, en route for England; but, in consequence of his presence being required at the Fields, he returned in April following. Eventually he availed himself of the leave granted him by Government, on the recommendation of his medical adviser, and finally left for Europe on the 10th October. After a short stay there he returned about the middle of last year, apparently restored to health. He immediately resumed his duties as Attorney-General, but it was evident to his friends that still further rest was required, and accordingly a further leave was granted him for one month. Feeling that duty demanded his presence, he again resumed work; and on the departure of Mr. Recorder BARRY on leave he was sworn in as Acting Recorder of the High Court of Griqualand West on the 10th January of this year, from which date, up to within a week of his decease, he occupied the Bench. The cause of his death was disease of the heart, which was no doubt accelerated by the various duties and responsibilities imposed upon him, first as Commissioner and Public Prosecutor, and subsequently as Attorney-General and member of the Executive. We feel convinced that, notwithstanding Mr. THOMPSON’s views on certain matters connected with the government of the Province have

DEATH OF CAPT. HOPKIRK
In the death of Capt. HOPKIRK the Volunteers of Cape Town have lost an excellent and efficient officer, the Masons a worthy brother, and the town an estimable citizen. His funeral tomorrow (Friday) will be largely attended. – Standard and Mail.
SUDDEN DEATH
Yesterday morning a man named James MERRITT, who lived in William-street, met his death under circumstances which seem to call for investigation. From what we learn, it appears that the deceased has been poorly for a few days; but it was not thought necessary to call in medical aid. Yesterday morning his wife having dipped a cloth in vinegar and water spread it upon her husband’s face and left the room. On her return the woman found that he was dead. Information was at once given to the police, and the Resident Magistrate, having visited the house, directed the removal of the body to hospital. An inquest into circumstances will be held before the Resident Magistrate tomorrow. – Standard.

ACCIDENT
We regret to learn that Mr. STEINMANN, the enterprising landlord of the “Masonic Hotel” in this town, and well known in connection with the coaching trade of these parts, has met with a rather serious accident. It seems that while travelling from Graham’s Town to this place on Friday last, and when about twelve miles from the former place, he was, by some means, thrown from the cart on to the ground, dislocating his shoulder and breaking one of his ribs. Medical assistance was shortly afterwards obtained, and Mr. STEINMANN arrived here last evening, considering the nature of his injuries, in a very satisfactory state.
