Baptism of Joseph Ebenezer not found but his Death Notice (Cape Archives) says he was born in Sheffield. A family Bible lists his date of birth as May 1st 1812 in Scotland Street, Sheffield. Joseph Ebenezer was baptised as an adult (aged 22)  in the Union Chapel, Grahamstown on 4th April 1834.

Baptism of James also not found. Family Bible lists his date of birth as January 8th 1815 in Roscoe Square, Sheffield.

The Bible also lists a daughter Helen who was born November 3rd 1809 and was buried July 15th 1810 in Manchester

See correspondence of William SHEPHERD in 1826 (CO48/69) where William THACKWRAY applies to bring his "sister, brother-in-law and 10 children" to the Cape. The contact name and address given was Mr. J. GREENWOOD, Thorp Arch, or Boston near Wetherby, Yorkshire

Mary THACKWRAY daughter of John THACKWRAY labourer baptised 13 June 1784 in St.James, Wetherby, Yorkshire

[This is almost certainly William THACKWRAY's younger sister. Wetherby was originally part of the ancient parish of Spofforth. Until the second half of the nineteenth century it was served by a succession of chapels and chaplains or curates, dependent on the Rector of the mother church of Spofforth, some three miles away. The following baptism in the Wetherby Chapel of All Saints, Spofforth would seem to support Mary being William's sister and her husband Joshua GREENWOOD being the contact mentioned in SHEPHERD's 1826 correspondence.]

June 20th 1779 Wm, son of John THACKERAY [very probably the baptism of the 1820 settler]

John THACKWRAY and Ann PETTY, both of this parish, married October 13 1777 by banns in Long Marston, Yorkshire

Parish of Cowthorpe, Yorkshire

John son of John THACKWRAY (son of Will'm THACKWRAY by Mary his wife, of Clifford) and Ann his wife (daughter of John PETTY of Cowthorpe, farmer, by Ann the daughter of Will'm SNOWDEN of Methley, farmer), born on Monday the 23rd March, baptised on Sunday the 29th March 1778

John son of John THACKWRAY and Ann his wife buried April 16th 1778

Joshua and Mary GREENWOOD  did indeed have ten children between 1806 and 1826, but an eleventh child was born in 1828, and Joshua and Mary appear on the 1851 census in Clifford cum Boston. They were presumably not granted leave to travel to the Cape.

Also in the 1826 correspondence of William SHEPHERD is an application to bring out his brother-in-law, Crofts MAYER, with wife Catherine and seven children.
