Sources in South Africa list the wife of John KIRKMAN as Mary Alice ASHWORTH, with a marriage in Cheshire. This appears to have originated from a submitted IGI entry, but there is no gravestone or death notice to prove Mary's maiden name. However, there is a marriage in the Collegiate Church of St.Mary, St.Denys and St.George (later Manchester Cathedral), where their first child was baptised, which seems a likely match.

John KIRKMAN of the Parish and Town of Manchester, weaver, and Mary HEALSE [sic] of the same place, spinster, were married by banns on 7 December 1806
John KIRKMAN (signed)
Mary HEALES [sic] (made her mark)
Witnesses: James KIRKMAN and Mary KIRKMAN

The date and place of this marriage fits, as does John's occupation, and the signature bears a strong resemblance to his signature on the 1823 Settler Statement (qv)

The top signature below is from the Settler Statement, and the bottom one from the marriage of John KIRKMAN to Mary HEALES.
