£25 deposit paid for James DICKS Snr to emigrate to the Cape of Good Hope.

Statement for Joseph DICKS of Rietfontein in ward of Kraai River and district of Aliwal North. (filed with Death Notice of James DICKS – signature actually thought to be Jonah DICKS)

“I am the son of James and wife who died in England. Came out in Weymouth in Ford's party. My father had remarried, but my stepmother died on the ship in Table Bay and was buried in Cape Town. She left a child which was afterwards given to a farmer called SCHEEPERS to bring up. I believe the child died. I think a boy....”
