The older children listed in the Settler Returns are from William's first marriage. His wife was Sarah, but there are several marriages of a William REED to a Sarah in the London area about this time and it is impossible to know which is the correct one.

William's second wife was born Eliza GOUGH. Her Death Notice (Cape Archives) gives her maiden name as GOUGH and her married surname as POWELL, despite her two children being listed as REED. It may be that after her marriage to Mansel POWELL she and William did not in fact marry, but simply emigrated as husband and wife.
